Research = Pain

2002

In 1999 and 2000 a couple of people participating in research studies at some East Coast med schools died unexpectedly.  Afterwards, everyone went absolutely nuts, creating a mountain of paperwork that anyone who does research on animals or humans must climb. As a result, studies have to be planned months, even years, in advance.  To me this is a bad sign that people have lost view of the big picture, going nuts over one admittedly tragic death but ignoring all the uncounted people who die because we now can only afford to do research into questions whose answers are known before we even begin.  It's getting so bad that I'm considering changing my mind about wanting to do clinical research.
